Former players in the NHL eventually find their way back into the league. Essentially starting with a minor role within management and making their way to a General Manager role. Former players who become management seem to gain the respect of players more because they are relatable. The league is seeing more and more former players become managers and are having great success.

Colorado Avalanche's GM is Joe Sakic. One of the Hockey greats who has become a Gm and won the Stanley Cup last season and may have more opportunities to do so with locking up the youth of the team. Sakic was hired in 2014 and certainly has seen struggles within the organization. A record of 165-175-37 and a Stanley Cup to the resume, the record does not show the ability he has to keep players together and still win, of recent, the team has done well.
Sakic's former teammate Rob Blake is the general manager of the Los Angelos Kings, a team which much success over years but have been in a bit of rebuild. Blake was hired in 2017 and has a record of 65-55-12, not a bad record for a team on the rebuild. This team will continue to get better, and this may have a lot to do with the Genral Manager.

With all this being said, Flyers Genral Manager Chuck Fletcher is on the hotseat, and Danny Briere is in the loom and could be a possible candidate. The fanbase has been calling for the firing of Fletcher since the offseason and a former player like Briere, who has had tremendous success not only with the Flyers as a player, but in the league as a whole. He has gained the respect league wide and can be an important part of the post Fletcher era, if that ever comes.
