It's a tough break for Cam Atkinson. The Flyers' forward had high hopes coming into last season, with plans to step up as one of the team's leaders. Atkinson was also expected to serve as a vital link between the locker room and coach John Tortorella, given their past history together in Columbus. Plus, after notching a 20-goal, 50-point campaign in his first year with the Flyers, the sky seemed to be the limit for the skilled winger.

But fate had other plans. When training camp rolled around, Atkinson wasn't feeling quite right. He tried to push through, but his condition only worsened. "I just didn't feel good for whatever reason, in the gym and on the ice," Atkinson said. "It kept getting worse and worse, and I was like, something's wrong." He sought out medical advice from doctors in both Philly and Columbus, and tried various forms of therapy, but nothing seemed to do the trick.
It was a frustrating time for Atkinson, as he tried to get to the bottom of what was causing his discomfort. Finally, after a long and winding journey, he received a diagnosis: a herniated disc. Surgery was the recommended course of action, and Atkinson went under the knife on December 21. The recovery process was expected to take four months, which meant he would miss the rest of the 2021-22 season, but would be ready to go for the start of next season.
Despite the setback, Atkinson is in good spirits and feeling optimistic. "I feel great now," he said. "I feel back to myself and selfishly, anxiously want next season to start." It's clear that he's eager to get back on the ice and prove that he still has plenty of gas left in the tank. Here's hoping that he can return to form and help lead the Flyers to success in the seasons to come.

"I feel great now," he said. "I feel back to myself and selfishly, anxiously want next season to start."

"A lot of ups and downs of good, bad," he said. "But I spent a lot of time with my family, which was great - time that I never would get otherwise, and I took advantage of that for sure."

"I know what to expect out of him," Atkinson said. "And he knows what to expect out of me and just being that sounding board from the players to him and vice versa."

"Not being able to battle with my teammates and battle with everyone and try to change the culture here that was probably the toughest part, was not being able to go to war with the guys," he said.

Best wishes moving forward Cam, let's have a great season!
