After being embroiled in a scandal where Brendan Leipsic made derogatory comments about a fellow player's girlfriend, he faced consequences for his actions.

On May 8, 2020, he was placed on waivers and subsequently had his contract terminated.
Since then, Leipsic has found a new home in the KHL, playing for SKA St. Petersburg after being brought over by CSKA Moscow in August 2021. It seems that Leipsic has developed a fondness for Russia, as he has even requested citizenship from Vladimir Putin and already obtained a Russian passport.
