Mired in a three-game losing streak, the Philadelphia Flyers entered Tuesday's game looking to get back into the win column against the Columbus Blue Jackets, a team they had lost to the week prior. Similar to the Flyers, the Jackets were ravished by injuries to several of their top end players heading into the contest. Former Flyers assist/turnover machine, Jakub Voracek, is believed to be recovering from a concussion. Fifty goal candidate and fashion guru, Patrick Laine, is out for three to four weeks with an ankle sprain. And the most notable omission from the Jackets lineup, Zach Werenski, is likely miss the remainder of the season with a separated shoulder and torn labrum.

1. The Flyers Love Digging A Hole For Themselves:
Once again the Flyers surrendered the first two goals of the game and the first happened on a mental lapse. A soft dump orchestrated a wholesale change, with all five skaters peeling to the bench at the same time. The dreadful change allowed the Jackets an easy entry and left the Flyers scrambling defensively.

When asked about the Flyers start, John Tortorella wasn't shy about it:
2. Special Teams Part Of The Equation Again:
Columbus capitalized on their first power play, with Johnny Gaudreau finding captain Boone Jenner cutting through the top of the paint. Rasmus Ristolainen cheated up and noticed Jenner cutting behind him too late.
The Flyers responded on their second power play of the game, with a new look on the top unit. Noah Cates had the mojo going and was rewarded by Tortorella with a promotion to the #1 PP and the move paid off. Kevin Hayes and Cates initiated a clean entry on the rush, which has been a struggle of late, with a perfect give and go. Cates was left with an open look on the shot, that Joonas Korpisalo turned aside, but Konecny was on the doorstep to clean up the rebound.
3. Deception Creating Offense:
The Flyers first two goals came off of Flyers forwards selling looks to free up passing lanes and freeze the tender. Scott Laughton and Travis Konecny won a board battle behind the net and Konecny came out from behind the goal line and looked off the defending forward by selling a pass to Seeler. The hesitation freed up a passing lane to Hayes in the slot, who made no mistake with the one-timer.
The second goal came off of a defensive zone faceoff win. Owen Tippett carried the puck out of the Flyers zone and pull the defender towards him on the entry. Tippett faked going wide and when Andrew Peeke committed to Tippett, he slipped the puck to MacEwen to turn the rush into a 2 on 1. MacEwen froze Elvis Merzlikins on the fake shot and found a wide-open Cates for the tap in.
4. Mental Lapses Costly:
Travis Konecny's decision making has been good this year, but he tried to filter a puck to the net as the last man back, instead of utilizing either of his D who were both wide open. Konecny ripped the snap shot Jenner's shin pads, who was off to the races on a breakaway and beat Hart clean.
Thirteen seconds later Ristolainen and Noah Cates lost a puck battle behind the net and Cates went puck chasing, leaving his check completely wide open in front of Hart. Robinson took advantage of the absent coverage by Cates and slid the biscuit under Hart's pad.
The flyers showed resilience and managed to salvage a point losing in overtime, but those are the teams that you need that extra point against. Hayes got a fake shot pass picked off in the extra session and the Jackets quickly countered on the attack; executing a perfect tic-tac-toe scoring play to seal the victory.
For the first time in a week the Flyers got contributions from unluckily sources; Nick Seeler burying a point shot and Noah Cates chipping in a goal and an assist, but it wasn't enough.
Morgan Frost registered his first assist in nearly a month, but he looks disengaged and complacent at times. There doesn't seem to be a sense of urgency in his game or a consistent complete level that will endear himself to Tortorella.
Travis Sanheim was -2 in 20 minutes of ice time and registered 2 shots and 1 block, also struggling with confidence and lacking the offensive upside we have seen from his game in the past.
The Flyers are back at it Thursday, against the leagues hottest team, The Boston Bruins. If the Flyers do not correct some of their issues prior to Thursday, they could be in for long night. The Bruins, particularly David Pastrnak, have owned the Flyers in recent years.
