The Ottawa Senators need cap space to sign Shane Pinto and the Flyers are reportedly willing to help them out.

The Ottawa Senators have only $120,953 in cap space available. Ottawa could get that total to $1.7 million with a roster of only 17 players and two goalies. That amount still won't be enough as Pinto is projected to earn $1.88 million per season. Ottawa wants to slot the 6'3" center into the third line center position and are determined to make the playoffs and snap their six-year playoff drought, third longest in the league, but cannot afford to. As a rookie last season Pinto scored 20 goals and has 15 assists.
The Flyers were interested in Pinto but as reported they were also seeking a high-level prospect or a first-round pick. Ottawa has two of them but Ottawa is reportedly not willing to pay that price.

The next option is Ottawa can trade a player to get that cap space it needs to sign Pinto. Ottawa's choice is said to be Mathieu Joseph. Joseph makes $2.95 million per year through 2025-26, and if traded, would allow Ottawa the cap space to sign Pinto.

The Flyers are open to taking on Joseph's contract and helping Ottawa's situation.
Mathieu Joseph, the 6'1", 26 year old, from Laval Quebec, was drafted by Steve Yzerman, the Tampa Bay GM at the time, in the 4th round of the 2015 NHL Draft. Joseph was acquired by Ottawa from Tampa Bay for Nick Paul. Joseph spent 3 years in Tampa winning the Cup in 2020 and 2021 and was traded to Ottawa in 2021-22.

The Flyers are interested in helping Ottawa and Ottawa desperately needs to sign Pinto, and this is the solution.
