Flyers Come Out On The Losing End Again - Flyers 2 vs Flames 5 Highlights - Analysis - Insights

The Flyers managed to cut the lead in half before the end of the first period, on Tanner Laczynski's first NHL goal.

The Flyers have been a strong second period team for the most part this season, but got outplayed by the Flames in the second stanza tonight. Rasmus Andersson extended the Flames lead to 3-1 on a lucky deflection and Calgary held the Flyers to six shots.

The Flyers made their push in the third period, but it was too little too late. Farabee scored midway through the third to cut the deficit, but two empty goals sealed the game for the Flames, who won 5-2.

1. Jacob Markstrom Out Duelled Carter Hart:

With the game on the line, Markstrom made a game saving stop on Joel Farabee, who picked up a loose puck on a scramble in front. Farabee looked to have an open net, but Markstrom aggressively slid across the goal line to erase the opportunity. Markstrom stopped 23 of 25 shots against.

Carter Hart was victimized early on by a pair of odd man rushes and later, by an unfortunate deflection off of the stick of Farabee. Hart looked solid, stopping 24 of 27 shots against, but didn't get the offensive support that still may be weeks away.

2. The Bad, The Bad, and The Ugly:

Tony DeAngelo is a high risk, high reward player who often sacrifices defense to try and make a play on offense. Tonight was no exception, as he was caught attempting to make an offensive play on the first two goals against and was burnt getting caught and giving up two 2 on 1's.

The Bad #1 - The first pinch, DeAngelo's stick got caught up in the defender and he lost control as he circled back up towards the blue line, causing the turn over and odd man rush against. DeAngelo lacked coverage by a forward on the play, but his decision to try and make a play up high was poor.

The Bad #2 - The second pinch by DeAngelo was a poor decision. Joel Farabee had his pass picked off just inside the blue line, which would have thrilled John Tortorella, and DeAngelo came into the zone with speed and tried to win the puck back, instead of recognizing the turnover and transitioning back in a defensive posture.

The Ugly - Travis Sanheim also didn't make it very difficult on the puck carrier on either of the 2 on 1's, conceding clean shots to both Jonathon Hubredeau and Dillon Dube. The old school thinking is taking away the pass on a 2 on 1, but to do it without pressuring the puck carrier, forcing a decision, and giving up absolutely clean looks on your tender has to be questioned.

3. It Wasn't All Bad!

Tanner Laczynski scored his first goal in the NHL on a spinning, whirling pass from Kevin Hayes; a deft tip to beat Jacob Markstrom

Laczynski was a late call up to replace the injured Scott Laughton. Laughton was listed as being out with an upper body injury, but that vague update could likely be narrowed down to a concussion.

4. Joel Farabee:

The frustration was evident of the face of Farabee when Rasmus Andersson had his one-timer deflect off of the shaft of Farabee's stick, breaking it and beating Carter Hart.

Farabee atoned for his earlier miscue and scored a much need goal, for both himself and the Flyers, to get Philly back in the game.

Nicolas Deslauriers and DeAngelo converged quickly on Andrew Mangiapane and forced him to make an ill advised pass into middle of the ice. Farabee made a perfect read on the pass and jumped into the lane to pick the puck off. Farabee fired a quick snap shot and beat Markstrom short side; a much needed goal for Joel.

Joel Farabee has been struggling to find his groove this year and if the Flyers want to break out of this losing streak, Farabee will be one the offensive weapons they will need. His aggressive read and finish on the goal are positive signs for the Flyers.

The Flyers head to Washington to face a Metro Division rival on Wednesday. The Capitals can sympathize with Philly, as they have lost the most man games to injury in the NHL and have struggled to put wins up on the board.
