Flyers' Former Goalie Holds Unbreakable Record
Love him or hate him, Ron Hextall, the former starting goaltender of the Flyers, had an illustrious career. He spent his entire career with the Philadelphia Flyers, starting in the 1986-1987 season. Eleven of his thirteen seasons were with the Flyers, with brief stops in the New York Islanders and the Quebec Nordiques.
Throughout his time in the NHL, he played 608 games and achieved an impressive record of 296-214-69. Hextall was known for his aggressive style of play and his ability to fight, although Felix Potvin might beg to differ.
Recently, a tweet surfaced highlighting one particular stat and record that Hextall owns, a record that will likely never be broken. On December 9th, 1987, in a game against the Boston Bruins, Hextall became the first goaltender in NHL history to score a goal.
But that wasn't the only remarkable achievement for Hextall. He also etched his name in the history books by being the first goalie in NHL history to score a goal during the playoffs. This remarkable feat occurred on April 11th, 1989, in a game against the Washington Capitals.
Goalies scoring goals was a rarity in the league, with only a few exceptional players, including Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils, capable of doing it consistently. However, Hextall was the pioneer in this regard, making his accomplishment all the more extraordinary and something to be proud of.
