Former NHLer John Scott sent a warning to the Maple Leafs

Like Tkachuk, Matthews is American born and in many people's eyes, would jump at the opportunity to return to Arizona and play for his hometown team. Scott wonders about the Leafs becoming the next Calgary.

Matthews has two more seasons in Toronto before becoming a free agent in 2024. That year also includes a no-movement clause, meaning if an extension isn't done by 2022-2023, Toronto will be unable to trade him for assets.
