There has been talk of Ryan Smith, the owner of Utah Jazz, expressing interest in bringing an NHL team to Salt Lake City. The speculation was fueled by his recent dinner with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.
However, the current arena, Vivint Arena, has limited seating capacity for hockey games, and the configuration required for the ice rink is not visually appealing. As Salt Lake City is bidding for the 2030 Olympics, a new facility could be built to accommodate both an NBA and an NHL team.
If NHL expansion is not an option, there could be potential for relocating a struggling team, including the Columbus Blue Jackets, Arizona Coyotes, Florida Panthers, or New York Islanders, which are facing attendance and financial issues.
