The NHL announced Thompson's retirement in July, and he rested before finding another job.
His new career begins with the Ontario Reign organization in the American Hockey League as a skills coach. While Thompson was not considered one of the NHL's most skilled players, he was a master at face-offs all the while and won 53.2% of all 9,147 of his draws.
Although stickhandling, skating, and shooting pucks are fundamental skills, there are many more.
Since Thompson was brought into the Montreal Canadiens organization to help mentor
Nick Suzuki in 2018-2020, it was only natural for him to ascend to a coaching position.
Prior to his retirement, he served as an unofficial coach for the Ontario Reign and as a player for the team.
Despite some tough times, Thompson was given an opportunity to grow with the Anaheim Ducks. If it weren't for the team's support and ability to get sober, he wouldn't have had the opportunity to grow.
As a mentor and skills coach in the AHL, he will continue to fulfill a different purpose in hockey.
