John Tortorella has recently trended throughout the NHL for benching his teams leading scorer, Kevin Hayes, who is on pace to have his best season after with 29 points in 31 total games so far.
Tortorella didn't give much reasoning to the media for benching his star player, but many assumed it was due to Hayes's turnover and penalty taken two nights before. Tortorella stated a few sentences on the topic and they were along the lines of ''Everyone needs to be held accountable, no matter who you are''.
Hayes, after being benched a game and watching his team lose in the press box, decided to comment on the head coaches decision this morning, here's what he had to say:
Hayes today:
"I'm never gonna say there's a benefit to being benched. I'm sorry. I don't think I should have been benched, but it's not my decision. He's a coach. I'm a player. He makes the lineup, he wants the best team on the ice to ultimately win, & that's what he went with."

Tortorella snapped right back at Hayes's comments just moments laters with the following:
Tortorella said he's not going to get into it, and moving forward he has standards that every player should meet, he figured there was no disconnect, «I will never lie to a player about anything. I know you guys think it's about a turnover. I will never bench a guy over a turnover.''
