The Philadelphia Flyers were in need of a coach this offseason as they had a interim coach take on the job after Alain Vigneault was fired last year, Mike Yeo was the Flyers serving coach, until crunch time happened, the Flyers were a month or two out from starting the regular season and time was ticking, they needed a coach.
Barry Trotz, Bruce Cassidy, John Tortorella and multiple other coaching veterans who have been with winning teams in the past were up for grabs. The Flyers reportedly offered Barry Trotz a large contract that would make him the highest paid NHL coach, but Trotz showed no interest in playing with the Flyers.
John Tortorella however, saw potential in the young Flyers team, and felt like his hard-headed coaching ability would help improve the organization.
Tortorella has coached in the NHL for 23 years, since 1999, and has always stuck to his old-aged ways, which includes the grittiness and old ways of the NHL back in the day.
