As the Flyers' new season approaches the 10-game mark, there was a surprising start to the year when the Flyers held the lead in the Metropolitan Division with a 4-2-1 record. Some felt the team was overperforming early on, as the team continued to work on defensive play and received solid goaltending from Carter Hart.
Over the past few games, however, the reality is setting in that the team is starting to falter and fall in the standings. They are now sixth in the Metropolitan Division and have a record of 4-4-1 through nine games. This was widely expected, as the Flyers were projected to be near a lottery position at the end of the season.
During yesterday's game between the Hurricanes and the Flyers, the team lost 3-2 in a close battle. However, some fans decided to boo the team after the game. These gestures did not go unnoticed by head coach John Tortorella, as, for a second night, he had to explain to the media and the fans where the team stands and the reality of their situation.
The decision last year to rebuild this franchise and begin restocking the cupboards with prospects and draft picks is the right move for the Flyers. Rebuilding can be tricky, as sometimes it doesn't work.
