Local Flyers fans and Highschool hockey team gather together for a good cause
Every young hockey player has a dream of playing in the NHL. Starting from when they first put a pair of skates on. The competitive atmosphere starts to take full once you hit the high school hockey era. In Philadelphia, high school hockey is taken as serious as it can get. Rivals such as Archbishop Ryan vs Father Judge will forever be a great one.
Playing for Father Judge like most guys I know was always the best experience in our careers. Some of the former players and alumni had gone on to coaching, guys like Steve Mead and Greg Johnson who are coaches for the Father Judge Varsity team and longtime Flyers Fans.
The boys gathered together and held a local fundraiser at Currans in the Northeast section of Philadelphia to raise money for the school's hockey team. Ton of parents, Alumni, current and former players gathered for the great cause. I was in attendance for the event and got to spend time and check out the event. I saw guys i haven't seen in years and we picked it right back up. Former Father Judge Ice Hockey coach Eric Kurtz even stopped by. A coach who certainly had the "Tort's mentality" like no other, one of the toughest coaches we ever had but one of the greatest role models as well. Talking with Coach Johnson, I asked him when did the idea come of doing the event and he had this to say.
We really wanted to give the opportunity to our players to be a part of something special. We found areas where we can have an outdoor game. Start a Father Judge Hockey Hall of Fame. Just give more to the kids then coaching and that will be our goal
Coaches are more than coaches to the players and community. They are role models as well. That is exactly what Father Judge high school is all about. Seeing something like this being done for the players is an incredible thing. A lot of people had gathered for the event yesterday and it turned out to be a great success. An announcement had been made that more events are coming in the future and that is something to be excited about.
