Recently, Auston Matthews has been among the names that receive the most attention around the National Hockey League, but not for the right reasons. Matthews has lately been under fire for his "lack of leadership," which was evident in the Leafs' most recent game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday, November 3. This criticism has come from several former NHL players as well as NHL media.
A Philadelphia Flyers forward named Travis Konecny was the target of Matthews' agitation the whole game. Konecny, who is about a foot shorter than Matthews, had had enough of Matthews' hacks and whacks by the time the game was over.
When Konecny stood up for himself and wanted to fight Matthews, he merely grinned and waited for his teammates to become involved. One of those two teammates that stepped into the game to save Matthews was Mark Giordano, a 39-year-old player for the Flyers.
Mike Rupp, a former enforcer in the NHL, examined the video and said that Auston Matthews should be embarrassed of himself since it was a clear demonstration of bad leadership.
