The regulations governing prospects in the Swedish Hockey Leagues and the NHL differ significantly.

The Philadelphia Flyers may have to adhere to these regulations due to a change in prospect governance between the NHL, AHL, and Swedish Ice Hockey Association.
According to a rule discovered by Bill Meltzer, if a team drafts a prospect outside the first round, the prospect would have to be returned to the SHL based on various factors such as age.
After a new rule change, #Flyers D prospect Emil Andrae may have to return to the SHL if he doesn't make the NHL roster out of camp.

Since Emil Andrae's contract was signed in 2023, and the rule was finalized in 2022, Andrae would not qualify as one of the exempt Swedish hockey players.
Even if a team drafts a Swedish prospect in the first round, this rule does not apply, and Andrae cannot be grandfathered into an exemption.
The benefit of European leagues is that prospects can be sent to the AHL earlier than their CHL counterparts, who must be 20 years old before being sent to the AHL.
However, this agreement has raised the age for SHL players to be sent to the AHL to 24, making the management of prospects more challenging.
Consequently, Andrae will have to make the team at training camp this season, or he will have to be returned to the SHL instead of being sent to the minor leagues.
