One year ago today, in July of 2021, the Flyers traded defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere to the Arizona Coyotes along with a 2022 2nd-round pick (Artyom Duda) and a 2022 7th-round selection (Miguel Tourigny, selected by the Montreal Canadiens). The Flyers received full salary cap relief ($4.5 million) on the remaining two years of the player's contract.

The Flyers subsequently applied the cap relief received on Gostisbehere toward the acquisition of defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen from the Buffalo Sabres on July 23, in exchange for defenseman Robert Hägg, the Flyers' 2021 first-round pick and the Flyers' second-round pick in the 2023 Entry Draft.
Per a high up source with the Flyers, there were about 7-8 teams that wanted to meet with Buffalo for Rasmus but none were willing to pay the big price to get him- except the Flyers,
Shayne Gostisbehere was a fan favorite here. He had an incredible freshman year scoring 17 goals and 29 assists in 64 games. He had a 15-game point streak going and was the runner up for the rookie of the year. Then, his sophomore year, he seemed to become a defensive liability, and focused on the big play. Causing him to go in and out of the line-up and eventually effected his time here in Philadelphia.
