As apart of our Flyers historical photo feature series brought to you by ''Scoop'' Cooper, Scoop covered the Philadelphia Flyers for over half a century (1969-2020) and more than 2,000 Flyers (and over 3,000 pro) games in person. Scoop has spent many years in the broadcast booth for NBC Sports Philadelphia, and also has been covering the Flyers for over 51 years, meaning Scoop was right there when the Flyers cherished a Stanley Cup Championship win in 1974, and he has a memorable photo to go right with it.
One of the biggest trades in terms of both players exchanged and positive effect on the Flyers came on January 28, 1972 when the club sent Serge Bernier, Jimmy Johnson, Bill Lesuk and Larry Brown (who was technically claimed on waivers) to the Los Angeles Kings for Bill Flett, Ross Lonsberry, Ed Joyal and Jean Potvin. While Joyal jumped to the new WHA after the season, Flett and Lonsberry were key players in the Flyers 1974 Cup team and Potvin was traded in March, 1973 to the New York Islanders for another key cog in checking center Terry Crisp.
This picture shows Bob Clarke (16) with Rick Foley (22) and a clean shaven Flett (21) shortly after the trade. By the next year "Cowboy" Flett had grown his impressive trademark beard and looked completely different. Unfortunately both Flett and Foley are no longer with us with Flett passing away in July, 1999 just a few days short of his 56th birthday and Foley passing in September, 2015 at 70.
