After 13 seasons in the NHL, defenseman Justin Braun has officially announced his retirement, according to a statement from the NHL Alumni Association released today.
Braun, a seventh-round draft pick of the San Jose Sharks in 2007, played over 800 games during his career, with 607 of those coming in a Sharks uniform. He spent nine seasons with San Jose, where he solidified his reputation as a dependable stay-at-home defenseman. The Philadelphia Flyers acquired him in 2019, and he spent the following three seasons with them before playing briefly for the New York Rangers during the 2021-22 season. In the end, Braun chose to return to Philadelphia to finish out his career.
Throughout his career, Braun scored a total of 199 points and played in over 100 playoff games with the Sharks. His strong defensive play, physicality, and leadership qualities made him a valuable asset during his time in San Jose. He routinely averaged over 20 minutes per game in San Jose, but his role decreased during his time in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, this season saw a further decrease in his role, registering just two assists in 51 games and playing less than 15 minutes per game.
Braun's best season was undoubtedly at the age of 30 in 2017-18, during which he recorded career highs in assists (28), points (33), average time on ice (21:20), and hits (143). Despite being a late selection in the 2007 draft, Braun currently ranks third among defensemen in games played, sitting only behind Kevin Shattenkirk and
Ryan McDonagh.
Throughout his career, Braun provided incredible value for the Sharks, and it is likely he would go much higher in a redraft. Although his role decreased in his final season, he will always be remembered as a reliable defenseman and a leader both on and off the ice.
