The Ottawa Senators have certainly had their shares of ups and downs in their return to the NHL. One controversial move was constructing their NHL rink in the outskirts of Ottawa in the small town of Kanata. This has been less of a desire for many fans due to the long drive to the rink and delays with traffic.

With the passing of Eugene Melnyk, and the franchise up for sale the NHL has made it a requirement that the new ownership group will need to complete a lease agreement with the National Capital Commission to build a new arena on a parcel of land known as the LeBreton Flats.

With most NHL rinks in the downtown core of their respective cities, the NHL expects a much shorter commute to the arena to improve the atmosphere. Having attended numerous Ottawa games in the past placing a new arena in the downtown core is much more viable.
