Report - Philadelphia Flyers having doubts with Hart as starting goaltender
In the early part of the season, Samuel Ersson struggled mightily. When Carter Hart went down with a back injury and followed that up with a bout against food poisoning, keeping him out of game action for a full two weeks, Ersson was the "go-to" in between the pipes. What could have been a disaster due to the way Ersson had been playing, appears to have been just what was needed. While losing a goalie to injury; especially the starting goalie, is never ideal, in this case, it appears to have helped Ersson's game, and the time away didn't hurt Hart's game any, either.
Ersson's biggest issue early on may have been a lack of playing time. Right now, the Flyers are mired in a portion of the schedule that has both goalies playing fairly regularly, but eventually, things will slow back down a bit and Ersson's starts may become a bit more sporadic, which means the struggles we saw early may return. It's going to be up to the young goalie to adjust.
There's no telling exactly what the Flyers front office has planned with Hart in the future. He's currently in a contract year but is also just 25, so still young enough that depending on what the front office sees as the team's "rebuilding window" he could still potentially fit into the rebuild. He's also made it clear he's willing to stick through the rebuild.
It will likely depend on what the front office sees the window as (is it 3 years or 5 years), but if they decide to re-sign him they very well could and try to run with a tandem of goalies who are both more than capable of playing 30+ games. Both guys are also favorites of the head coaches, so one being "slighted" over the other likely won't be a worry, either.
If Hart is re-signed will Ersson be able to adjust to playing fewer games than he's played in previous years? Granted, it's also worth recognizing that Ersson is only 14 months and 1 week younger than Hart, so the timeline of the rebuild could also affect him. The Flyers re-signed him to a 3-year contract that kicks in next season, and if they view 3 years as the window both goalies would be 27 and 28 respectively by the time their expected window arrives.
The Flyers currently have plenty of netminders in their system, but only 2 have proven to be capable for an extended period of time at the NHL level. Would it be more beneficial to continue with a 1A/2A tandem, or make a move and go with a 1A/2B tandem? The team plays for the goalie much more efficiently when they like and trust them, and it's quite clear this team likes and trusts both of their current goalies. Having a capable tandem, who the team likes and willingly plays for, if both are willing to play their roles, could be more beneficial than making a move.
