For young aspiring athletes, meeting their idols is a dream come true. Connor Bedard, whose hockey journey has led him to be the top pick in the 2023 entry draft, once looked up to Sidney Crosby as his hero. As Bedard's career reached new heights, Crosby took notice and decided to share some invaluable wisdom.
During an interview, Crosby offered Bedard advice that transcends the game: "Just enjoy it," he said. Crosby emphasized savoring the first year in the NHL, with its new experiences and challenges, reminding Bedard that it's a unique and unforgettable time.
"Maybe I would have declined a few more," Crosby continued. "There were numerous interview requests. You become quite busy, not only on the ice but also off it. You already put a lot of pressure on yourself, and he's bound to feel a tremendous amount of pressure, which is mostly self-imposed."
Crosby also touched on the pressures of being in a major hockey market, suggesting that Bedard consider declining interviews at times to manage the demands.
"Just enjoy it," said Crosby, as per Molinari. "I still remember so much of my first year, even all these years later. Entering new buildings, visiting new cities, and facing players you watched the year before. You're motivated for the challenge, but at the same time, you should savour it, because you only have that first year once, and there's so much that's amazing about it. He'll want to perform well, but he should also try to enjoy it as much as possible."
While the road ahead may be filled with expectations, Bedard's poised and professional demeanor suggests he's more than capable of handling the pressures that come with stardom.
