Teams that win championships build their cores through the Draft. Look at this year's two finalists. The Colorado Avalanche drafted Nathan MacKinnon, Gabriel Landeskog, Cale Makar and Mikko Rantanen. The Tampa Bay Lightning selected Steven Stamkos, Victor Hedman, Nikita Kucherov, Andrei Vasilevskiy and Ondrej Palat.

Those players are extremely difficult to acquire via free agency or the trade market. The Draft plays an enormous part in the conception of a team.
If the Flyers want to return to the playoffs, and eventually to the Stanley Cup Finals, they will have to draft "gems". This year's Draft isn't considered as the strongest, but there seems to be some good depth, which means that some players selected outside the first round could become really good players.
It's the case of forward Connor Kurth. He registered 81 points in 62 games in the USHL this year. His potential is pretty intriguing.

Here are his main characteristics according to Elite Prospect...
"He just swashbuckles his way through defenders, cutting through them like a hot knife through butter, with quick twitch hands, upper-body deception, and a just plain gifted touch. That gifted touch drives Kurth's best point-getting tool -- his shot. No matter the degree of difficulty on the pass, always bet on Kurth one or two-touching it directly into his shooting motion."

He was ranked 209th among North Americans skaters by the NHL Central Scouting, so the Flyers could take a chance on him in the 6th or 7th round...
