It has been some time since the Flyers had a captain, as the last one, Claude Giroux, was traded to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Owen Tippett and several draft picks. Since then, the Flyers have hired head coach John Tortorella, who has been at the helm but has yet to name a captain during his tenure.

The decision to name a captain ultimately rests with the coach, and Tortorella has made it clear that he would prefer to leave the team captainless for the past year to evaluate who would best fit the role.
As the new season begins, three names emerge as potential captains that Tortorella could consider. The first name that comes to mind is the number one center, Sean Couturier. Couturier has been battling injuries and underwent surgery that kept the captain out of the lineup last year. With his experience with the Flyers and his position as the number one center, he would likely be a strong candidate for this role, given his leadership qualities that could benefit the team.

Another choice to keep an eye on would be Scott Laughton. Laughton, who recently won a gold medal with Team Canada in the World Championships, has been recognized as one of the best leaders on the team. During the summer, several other teams contacted the Flyers, attempting to make trades, especially around the draft, as they were seeking a player with his stature and leadership. He will certainly be considered for the role if it is to be named.
Lastly, Travis Konecny holds the potential for a leadership role, as he was the leading point-getter for the team last season and remains a part of the top six forward group. As he has grown and matured as a player and as a person, he has shown that leadership could be an option for him, and the captaincy could be a possibility for his jersey. I expect Tortorella to consider him as a potential candidate.
The leadership group on the Flyers is growing and developing. It remains to be seen whether these players will be the choices Tortorella prefers or if he has another plan in the works.
