The Philadelphia Flyers were on an incredible run when things came to a screeching halt. After months of fighting just to hold a Wild Card spot, the Flyers had caught fire and were currently in a battle with the Washington Capitals for first place in the Metro Division. Despite injuries on the blue line and up front and even losing Carter Hart for a bit, the Flyers kept it together along the way. Head coach Alain Vigneault was a breath of fresh air for fans and players on the team and he explained one of the main changes he implemented. The team bought in and it lead to lots of success. "I think we're putting a lot of emphasis right now on making the other team's defensemen turn, making them go back for pucks, forcing them into turnover situations where we can press and create that quick counter — whether it be in the offensive zone or the neutral zone," Vigneault explained. "We are chipping more pucks in, and I think, at the end of the day, that's a read that players are going to get more used to."
General manager Chuck Fletcher had presented Vigneault before the season began a couple of things that needed to be changed. "Well, (Fletcher) did mention right off the bat that he thought this team (made) too many turnovers, too many low percentage plays," Vigneault said. "So, what we've been trying to do is just improve our overall knowledge of the game. When you start understanding the game, the risk/reward factor in making certain decisions, when you get better at it, you make better decisions and the team can benefit."
