The Philadelphia Flyers made a big decision this spring and Chuck Fletcher did the opposite of Ron Hextall did as he hired a head coach with NHL experience. Alain Vigneault is set to be the Flyers bench boss for the next couple of years which clearly indicates the Flyers are in "win now" mode. Luckily for Vigneault he'll be able to get a head start on getting to know his players. While it's not the whole roster, Vigneault will be along side forward Sean Couturier and goalie Carter Hart for Team Canada at the IIHF World Championships in Slovakia later this month. "It's going to help me to get to know them, and for them to get to know me," Vigneault said on Wednesday according to Philly.com. "I've never coached anybody who's on the Flyers team, and they'll have sort of a first-hand look on how I like to do things and they'll be able to talk to some of their (Flyers) teammates as we approach training camp. It's a good step, it's a fun step, and it's a great opportunity for those two and myself to represent our country."
The new Flyers head coach was trying to get a third Flyer on the team, however captain Claude Giroux is expecting a baby boy in August with wife Ryanne. "He preferred to stay back home, which is totally understandable," Vigneault said.
Not only will Vigneault get to coach Couturier and Hart, but he'll also get to coach against a couple of Flyers with James van Riemsdyk representing the USA, Jake Voracek and Radko Gudas the Czech Republic, Oskar Lindblom and Robert Hagg Sweden, and Michael Raffl who will represent Austria.
