"Over the weekend the hockey world learned some very tragic and unfortunate news as it was announced that Ray Emery had passed away. The former NHL goalie drowned while swimming in the Hamilton Harbour.Emery had actually spent the prior night along with other former professional players as they hit the ice for Hockey Night in Hamilton, a charity game that raises funds for Food4Kids.As highlights played in loop all over the place over the weekend, one of the ones most seen featured Emery as an Ottawa Senator pounding on Martin Biron when he was a member of the Buffalo Sabres. Senators' forward Chris Neil had concussed Sabres' co-captain Chris Drury which started a line brawl and involved the two goalies squaring off. Recently, Biron had grew a new respect for Emery. There was going to be a local roast of Biron in Buffalo and they had invited Emery to be part of the roast, making fun of him for the fight. From BuffaloHockeyBeat.com:"Kind of carving me for the fight and carving the Sabres and carving Buffalo and all of that, because that's really what you're supposed to do," Biron said.
But Emery "respectfully declined" the invitation, Biron said.
"He felt uncomfortable," he said. "He didn't want to be seen in that way and that light. Obviously, I respected his decision and it showed me a different side of him that I didn't know, right?""He was a fighter in every sense of the word," Biron said.Emery had touched many people across the hockey world and despite battling most of his career, always kept a smile on his face.
For years, Martin Biron only knew one side Ray Emery, the goalie he once fought. Then last year, Emery turned down an invitation to roast Biron, and he saw a different side. Story: https://t.co/4DbL8OpG5E ""He was a fighter in every sense of the word."" #Sabres #Buffalo pic.twitter.com/UxvqF3m4nT
