It's been quite the surprising season for the Philadelphia Flyers as most pundits across the league and the fan base felt they would not be in the position they are in currently.
Many pegged them to be near the bottom third of the league as the team has not changed drastically since last year. With players playing well above their expectations, it has caught the attention of one eastern Canadian team who is looking for help in numerous areas who happens to be the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Flyers have several players who have been linked to the Maple Leafs and recently the rumors have been growing louder. The Leafs biggest concern is their defence corps and they have fielded calls to general manager Danny Briere regarding
Sean Walker.
Must read on FlyersInsider
Walker has had a productive season with the Flyers and has shown head coach John Tortorella that he is capable of being in a shutdown role. The Maple Leafs are in dire need of a player like this as they have numerous holes and shortcomings in their defence.
Over the past 50 games, Walker has scored five goals with 12 assists for 17 points and is a + 6. He has become an expendable part for the Flyers as their logjam in their defence continues to challenge the team while being an unrestricted free agent next year. The Flyers would like to recoup any assets they can in case he does not re-sign.
Another player who is tied to the Maple Leafs is Flyers centre
Scott Laughton. Prior to his dismissal last season, former general manager Kyle Dubas made several inquiries to the Flyers regarding Laughton and his availability. It's clear that has not stopped as Brad Treliving likes what he sees.
The Maple Leafs do not have consistent secondary scoring on their bottom six which is attributed to a centreman issue. Head coach Sheldon Keefe has struggled to find a suitable mix to getting those players moving and helping on the score sheet. Laughton would give the team more depth down the middle and help the younger players give the scoring the Leafs need.
I expect general manager Brad Treliving to make more calls to the Flyers along with sending his scouts to Wells Fargo to see if there is a player they can acquire.
