The Philadelphia Flyers 2023-2024 season just ended, and we got to finally see the NHL debut of long-time prospect Ivan Fedotov. Ivan Fedotov originally signed an entry-level contract with the Flyers in the summer of 2022, however he was then forced into a year of military service for Russia. After his required miliary service he then signed with CSKA of the KHL, even though the Flyers should have had his rights.

The International Ice Hockey Federation banned goaltender Ivan Fedotov from international competition.

This ruling stems from the IIHF's original statement from last summer on whether Fedotov's contracts are valid: the #Flyers one or the KHL's CSKA.
The IIHF ruled that Fedotov should have played for the Flyers since the beginning of the season and he should have not played for CSKA. For this reason, CSKA was given a transfer ban that runs through August of 2026, meanwhile Fedotov will be given a six-month ban from signing with any team other than an NHL team. Also, Fedotov will be suspended three years form international competition which includes the Olympics, which Russia is already banned from. The Russian Ice Hockey Federation will also be fined one million Swiss Francs, which comes out to about $1.1 million U.S. All these punishments come down as Fedotov should have played with the Flyers for all of 2023-2024 season.
