The Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Ivan Fedotov finally made his debut in 2024 after being drafted in 2015. After making his debut this past season, Fedotov signed a 2-year extension with the Flyers to prevent him from becoming a free agent on July 1, 2024. Now the goaltender is facing sanctions from the International Ice Hockey Federation as Fedotov should have played with the Flyers for the entire 2023-2024 season.

Ivan Fedotov suspended three years by the IIHF which bars him from competing in the Olympics. Essentially, Fedotov cannot play internationally for 3 years. Also, Fedotov will be suspended for 6 months from any other club that is not an NHL team. If Fedotov finished his 2 years with the Flyers and then wants to go play in Russia, he will have to wait 6 months before signing with a team.
This really all began back in May of 2022, when Fedotov was supposed to come play for the Flyers but was then forced into a year of military service for Russia. After that year of military service, the Flyers should have still held his rights, but Fedotov instead signed with CSKA which caused the IIHF to rule that he and CSKA violated international agreements.
This then caused Fedotov to be suspended for four months, however, he kept playing for the Moscow side. Fedotov contract was then terminated last March by CSKA, then Fedotov came to North America and made his NHL debut. Ivan Fedotov will still be able to play for the Flyers for the 2024-2025 season as the suspension is only Internationally and non-NHL teams.
