Entering Saturday, the Philadelphia Flyers had a slight chance of being a wild card in the playoffs and even less of a chance finishing third in the division. Now, the Flyers have been officially eliminated from finishing third place in the Metropolitan Division.
The Flyers were eliminated as the New York Islanders lost in a shootout today against the Rangers and the Islanders only needed to obtain 1 point in their remaining games to eliminate the Flyers from catching them. The Islanders have not yet clinched a playoff position, as the Penguins, Red Wings and Capitals can all catch the Islanders in the standings.
The Flyers only hope of making the playoffs now is the final wild card. The Flyers must win their games against both the Devils and Capitals and hope for a lot of losses from the Redwings, Penguins and Capitals. With 2 games remaining, we will see very shortly if the Flyers can pull this off.
