Another Fletcher blunder is on full display with DeAngelo
When the Flyers hired Chuck Fletcher several years ago, the organization felt he was the right person for the job. After experiencing some success in Minnesota, the Flyers believed that he would bring a winning pedigree to the organization.
Unfortunately, that did not materialize, as every Flyers fan knows his tenure is one of the darker times in the organization's history.
Fletcher made costly mistakes with contract signings and trades that left many Flyers fans scratching their heads, wondering what he was thinking. The latest blunder that has come to light is the decision to place beleaguered defenseman Tony DeAngelo on unconditional waivers this afternoon, by general manager Danny Briere. [1]

The Flyers acquired DeAngelo from the Hurricanes on July 8th, 2022, when Fletcher traded three draft picks for him. However, after settling into his new team, DeAngelo did not have a great season, and it showed both on the ice and in his performance. He repeatedly clashed with head coach John Tortorella and failed to conform to the style of play that Tortorella wanted.
It's the second time DeAngelo has been placed on unconditional waivers to be bought out. The same situation occurred during his time with the Rangers. After passing through waivers, his cap hit of $1.65 million will be spread over two seasons. Currently, the Flyers have a $5 million cap hit, so this move will provide them with some extra flexibility in terms of their cap space.
Unfortunately, this is the cost of doing business as Briere continues to clean up the mess that Fletcher left behind.
