Over the past season and playoffs, there has been a steady rumour that the San Jose Sharks were prepared to part ways with Norris Trophy-winning defenseman Erik Karlsson in a bid to help rebuild their franchise.

As always, the internet was littered with potential rumours and thoughts on who could land such a player and how much he would cost to acquire.
It now appears that the Penguins are working hard to acquire Karlsson to bolster their lineup and continue the trend of sacrificing future assets for immediate success.
Recently hired president and interim general manager, Kyle Dubas, seems to have made it his goal to bring in this player, even though it would come at a significant cost for the Penguins.
According to sports writer Josh Yohn, the Penguins were on the verge of acquiring Karlsson on July 1st.

"As I mentioned recently, the Penguins were extremely close to landing Karlsson on July 1. A deal was close to being completed that morning, which would have rocked the hockey world on what is already a volatile day. I know Kyle Dubas likes him. A lot. Does that mean the deal happens? Your guess is as good as mine, but there's a real chance that it happens."

One of the sticking points that have hindered these potential blockbuster deals is the Sharks' reluctance to retain 40% of Karlsson's $11 million per season salary, which would amount to $4.5 million over four years.
However, Karlsson will likely be moved at some point in the near future, and his acquisition could provide the Penguins with renewed hope for immediate success.
Flyers fans will have to wait and see if Dubas can make the deal happen and whether it will ultimately prove to be a great move or a disappointment.
