During this offseason, the Flyers spent some cap space on veteran players after moving Kevin Hayes and Ivan Provorov out of the lineup. One of the players they acquired was the former New York Rangers defenseman, Marc Staal.

Staal, famous for being part of the Staal brothers, chose a different path than his siblings. His game was more defensive than offensive. The 36-year-old, standing at 6 feet four inches and weighing 208 pounds, was drafted in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft by the Rangers in the first round, 12th overall.
During his time in the NHL, he played for four different organizations. His last stop was with the Florida Panthers, where he played all 82 games, scoring three goals with 12 assists for 15 points and earning a +10 rating.
He decided to sign with the Flyers for a one-year deal during the offseason and, tonight, he was playing against Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers. However, he was forced to leave the game due to an upper-body injury sustained in the second period.

Staal tried to stay on the bench, but he was in too much pain, and he decided to exit. It was later updated that this injury is now deemed to be a long-term issue.
This left the Flyers short-handed in terms of manpower; however, it did not matter, as the Flyers won the game 4-1. With this injury, it opens the door for players like Egor Zamula and Emil Andrae to get some ice time and have a closer look as Flyers.
**UPDATE**
Staal will be out long-term
Hearing Staal suffered an injury to his ribs. That's a really uncomfortable recovery. Also, Risto is expected to be back in Saturday.
