The NHL has been actively seeking ways to bounce back financially after the impact of SARSCOV2 on the previous season. Commissioner Gary Bettman, in collaboration with the NHLPA, has been exploring various options to achieve this goal. However, there are concerns about the proposed plan to increase the number of games from 82 to 84 per season, as it appears to be a strategic move by the owners to gain sympathy.

This plan raises valid concerns regarding the players' well-being and family time, as it could result in additional physical strain and time away from loved ones. While the idea of heightened competition is appealing, the NHLPA should only agree to such a proposal if it adequately compensates the players for their efforts.
To illustrate the differences between the 82 and 84-game seasons, let's take a closer look at the schedule adjustments:
82-game season:
Each team plays 2 games against every team from the opposite conference (32 games)
Each team plays 3 games against same-conference teams from different divisions (24 games)
Each team plays 3 games against two same-division teams (6 games)
Each team plays 4 games against the remaining 5 division rivals (20 games)
84-game season:
Each team plays 2 games against every team from the opposite conference (32 games)
Each team plays 3 games against same-conference teams from different divisions (24 games)
Each team plays 4 games against all seven division rivals (28 games)
It is essential for the NHLPA to carefully evaluate the proposal and ensure that it provides fair compensation and benefits for the players. Ultimately, the players' well-being and their ability to spend quality time with their families should be prioritized.
