The number of teams competing for a playoff position in the NHL's Metropolitan Division has increased to more than five, including the Washington Capitals, who are holding onto the Metro's top wildcard spot with the Pittsburgh Penguins trailing them by only one point. Just two points separate the Florida Panthers and the New York Islanders from claiming the first wild card spot and eliminating the Washington Capitals from a playoff spot.
The Capitals must win tonight's game against the Carolina Hurricanes, the second-best team in the whole NHL; taking two points would be huge. If they suffer a loss, they might easily lose their place in the playoffs.
