It has been several days since the news broke from England, where former NHL player Adam Johnson of the Pittsburgh Penguins lost his life due to a freak accident involving a skate blade and his neck. The scene was gruesome after the collision, with Johnson skating off while bleeding profusely.
The news of his death has shocked the hockey world and has brought back memories of other incidents involving skate blades and neck injuries. One of the most famous incidents was when former Buffalo Sabres goalie Clint Malarchuk suffered a similar type of injury in 1989, from which he survived.
Following Johnson's tragic death, his former team, the Penguins, decided to require their AHL affiliate and ECHL teams to wear neckguards going forward.

While this decision is mandatory in the minor levels of hockey, the NHL organization can only recommend that their players do the same, as this will need to be discussed with the NHL Player Safety, the NHLPA, and the NHL Board of Governors.
A vote will need to be held, and language needs to be written into their collective bargaining agreement.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Johnson family.
