When the NHL introduced the Vegas Golden Knights as the newest expansion team at the time it took the hockey world some time to get used to, they dominated the entire league by surprise and finished first in the Pacific division with a 51-24-7 record, and made NHL history while doing so. They became the first team to make the playoffs in their inaugural season in the league since the Edmonton Oilers and Hartford Whalers in the 1979-80 season... quite crazy.

Not only was it pretty crazy to see, it also benefited the league finically well.
The NHL then decided it would be a good idea to introduce another team, that being the Seattle Kraken who are in their second NHL season this year. They are doing much better this season, but have also climbed the ranking in NHL team's revenue earnings, by a wide margin.
The NHL endured a tough financial situation when the pandemic hit due to C*VID-19, but the Kraken and Golden Knights as new additions have well above made that back for Gary Bettman and the NHL.

According to NHL insider Chris Johnston, the NHL may add another expansion club in the coming years. Johnston made the following statement:
"Someone had predicted to me during the pandemic that, you know, these owners obviously took on a lot of water during the pandemic when they couldn't sell tickets to their buildings and all those sorts of things.

And that future expansion would be one way to recoup some of those losses. So that'll be something. I'm not saying that on the immediate horizon, but, you know, maybe in a year or two time we're talking about expanding the league beyond 32."

This will be quite crazy, and make an odd number if so, so it'll be interesting to see how the NHL manages with that.
