Favouritism and special treatment from referees for certain players in the NHL have been an ongoing debate for decades.

For example, many feel today that Mario Lemieux if playing in today's NHL with the current rules, would have accelerated even further as a player due to the lack of clutch and grab he faced during his time playing.
The idea is that certain teams receive special treatment for refereeing during home games, such as the Toronto Maple Leafs. Many have pointed out that the Leafs always get the calls their way during their home games that will tilt the game in their favour to win more often.
Those are debates that will continue for many years to come, however, today head coach Jim Montgomery of the Boston Bruins wade in his thoughts about how Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby receives special treatment and in very open discussion.

Montgomery speaks of what he describes as «Sid Rules.» He feels that because the NHL takes care of their superstars that he will get special privileges and protections compared to other players throughout the league.
It was the case because Jeremy Swayman, Boston's starter of the evening was interfered with by Crosby in Montgomery and felt that he did not want to challenge due to these rules.
Time will tell if Montgomery will face a fine from the NHL for his remarks, and it's certainly possible to happen as many coaches have been fined this year due to their opinions on officiating who are protected by the NHL by nature.
