In 20 seasons as a coach, Tortorella is 673-541-132 with 37 ties with the New York Rangers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Vancouver Canucks and Blue Jackets. He won the Stanley Cup with the Lightning in 2004, and the Jack Adams Award as NHL coach of the year in 2004 and 2017.

Despite being 64 years old, Tortorella has as much energy as ever. Training camp, which opens on Sept. 21, has been planned since the week he was hired.
John Tortorella says this about the hire.
"I got my old camps from Columbus, and just kind of sat in my office there when I got the job and I wanted to get everything organized right away," he said. "And now we're just fine-tuning that. I'm asking my players to have a readiness, I need to have a readiness, too."

NHL.com writer Adam Kimelman sat down with the new coach of the Flyers and had asked him about the upcoming season. Cam Atkinson was part of the conversation as he played for Torts for 6 seasons in Columbus. He explains how the relationship was rocky for the both of them during season at times and training camp. That being said, he made the comment that Cam can assist with letting the guys know how things will be taught and what to expect.

With the expectation that Ryan Ellis is going to be shelved for the beginning the season, Coach was asked about the role and importance of Tony DeAngelo, the Flyer's biggest offseason acquisition. He confirms that DeAngelo will have a big role on the powerplay and will succeed 5 on 5. He states he really looks forward to coaching him.
