It's been a long, hard road for Flyers centerman Sean Couturier, who underwent major surgery and a very long recovery time that has taken almost two years. After being awarded a large contract extension of eight years and $62 million by former general manager Chuck Fletcher,

Couturier suffered an upper body injury on December 31, 2021. His injury continued to persist, and on February 11, 2022, it was announced by the team that he had undergone back surgery to repair the damage that was unable to be done by non-surgical means.
During his time away from the game, he was hardly mentioned or talked about, as Couturier remained private about his recovery. As last year's season was just finishing, Coots was working in the gym and working his way back into the lineup for this season coming. The Flyers breathed a sigh of relief when they heard that he was coming back for this season, and he gives the team a much-needed boost on their offense.
Coots himself discussed after the morning skate on how he feels about his return to the league and how his body is holding up to the vigorous training camp that head coach John Tortorella put together.

«Body is feeling good,» Couturier said on Monday after the morning skate in Voorhees, N.J. «A little tired here, it's been a long camp, a hard camp. A lot of skating. Trying to just recover as much as I can, find my legs again, build for the start of the season.»

«Yeah, I think so,» Couturier said. «Definitely, especially with how hard Torts' camp is, all the skating and testing and all that stuff. Surprisingly, I've felt really good. Probably felt better than other years, too.»

Tortorella also weighed in on his thoughts about Coots' return to the league and his team.
«I'm encouraged that no one's come to me. He hasn't come to me, the trainers haven't come to me, and (said) maybe we need to give him a little time,» Tortorella said on Monday morning before the game. «Not for a second.»

One can hope that this positivity and overall great physical health will continue for Coots as he continues to rebuild his stamina and strength as an NHL star and hopes to be part of the solution with the Flyers as they continue through their rebuilding phase.
