With talks swirling around the trade deadline and who the Flyers may or may not draft this year, Flyers writer Sam Carchidi wonders if some college free agents could be the key to a quicker rebuild.

As things currently stand, the Flyers have an issue in their prospect pool. Morgan Frost hasn't improved at the rate the team would like, Cam York is playing up and down the minors and the NHL, Nolan Patrick was a bust and Wade Allison is injury prone. Looking at college free agents isn't necessarily a bad idea. But would they come to the struggling Flyers?
«With not a lot of depth in the system, the chance to play relatively soon maybe even this year might be attractive,» says Carchidi.

However, signing college free agents all depends on roster space. If the Flyers get a haul for players like Giroux, then they may not have space to sign a free agent.

Flyers assistant GM Brent Flahr has already publicly stated that there are indeed some players that entice them. But they need to be careful about taking opportunities away from the players they have here already.
«We have a couple of guys we've targeted,» Flahr said of the college free agents. «At the same time, we have to be a little careful of muddying the waters and taking opportunities away from guys we already have. We'll see where it goes.»

Ben Meyers, a center for the University of Minnesota, is highly rated by many scouts. Both GM Fletcher and assistant GM Flahr have strong ties to Minnesota. Meyers even attended Flyers' development camp once.
Meyers, 23, is 5'11 and was most recently a standout for team USA at the Beijing Olympics. He had 2 goals and 2 assists in 4 games in China.
This year, he has 15 goals and 19 assists in 29 games for the University of Minnesota.
