This morning, Philadelphia Flyers reporter Sam Carchidi had the great idea of reminding us just how good Gerry Mayhew was as a player. Since being put on waivers by GM Chuck Fletcher, Mayhew has scored 2 goals in 6 games with the Anaheim Ducks.
«Gerry Mayhew, put on waivers over Max Willman (!) 12 days ago, scored his second goal in his last 4 games with Anaheim. No, he wasn't a top-6 player, but he supplied speed and energy for the bottom of the #Flyers' lineup.»
In contrast, Mayhew 29, only had 6 goals in 25 games with the Flyers this season. This is his bomb of a clapper he used last night,.

His first goal came off the rush and was a quick wrist shot hard to the blocker side.
Dissecting Carchidi's comments, he seems to elude that Max Willman should have been the one put on waivers.
Willman has 4 goals and 2 assists in 41 NHL games this season. But, he's bigger, younger and has more upside. Mayhew on the other hand, played bigger than his frame suggested and was arguably a harder worker.
Willman has one more year after this one at $750,000 whereas Mayhew would have been a free agent. Did Chuck Fletcher just make another huge mistake? Time will tell.
