Brayden Schenn was traded to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Jori Lehtera, a 2017 1st round pick which turned out to be Morgan Frost at 27th overall, and a conditional 2018 first-round pick. Since joining the Blues, Schenn has been instrumental in their Stanley Cup victory and consistent post-season performance since 2019.

However, his services come at a high cost for the team. According to The Athletic's rankings of worst contracts in the NHL, Schenn and the Blues rank #6.
Schenn's contract for the 2023-2024 season will consume a higher percentage of the cap. For this season and the next, he will earn $8 Million AAV until 2025-2026, when it will decrease to $6.5 Million.

Despite his reputation as a reliable two-way center with a solid offensive output, his defensive liabilities have increased.
The issue is that despite being a solid scorer, the Blues get badly out chanced with Schenn on the ice to 45 percent of the expected goals in 2021-22 and just 41 percent last season. Both were well below the team average, with most of the problem stemming from Schenn's inability to suppress chances against. That wasn't a huge issue in 2021-22, but the good fortune ended last year as Schenn's defensive numbers worsened. That led to Schenn only being on for 46 percent of the goals.

Contract: $6.5M x five years
Surplus Value: -$20.4M
Positive Value Probability: 15 percent

When Schenn is on the ice, the Blues have been scored against 46% of the time. This makes his expensive contract appear even worse.
If the Blues want to improve and remain in contention, Schenn will need to improve his defensive game while receiving little support. For now, the Blues and Schenn seem to struggle to be successful in the long-term.
