In a look back to 2021, we saw a different side of John Tortorella, known for his strong personality, as he expressed genuine sadness and emotion. While he's usually associated with his intense demeanor and clashes with people in hockey, this incident revealed a more human aspect of him.
The moment centered around the tragic passing of Matiss Kivlenieks, a young goalie for the Columbus Blue Jackets, who lost his life in a fireworks accident over the 4th of July weekend in 2021. Kivlenieks was on the verge of starting his career in the National Hockey League, and his sudden death deeply affected the entire Blue Jackets family.
When Tortorella, the former head coach, was asked about Kivlenieks, he struggled to find words and held back tears. This softer side of Tortorella was a significant departure from his usual tough stance, showing how much the young goalie meant to those who knew him.
