There are instances when NHL teams reconsider a player through various means, such as trades, contract signings, or a professional tryout (PTO). A case in point is Sam Gagner of the Edmonton Oilers, who is currently in his third stint with the team. He was signed to a PTO deal to assess whether he could once again fit into the Oilers' lineup.
Throughout his career, he has played for numerous teams since being drafted by the Oilers. The Chicago Blackhawks selected Adam Clendening in the second round of the 2011 draft. Throughout his career, he has played for the Canucks, Oilers, Penguins, Coyotes, and Blue Jackets. He spent time with the Flyers organization and many thought he would be brought back to spend time with the teams AHL, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
However, his most successful NHL season was in 2016-17 with the Rangers, where he played 31 games, scored 2 goals, recorded 9 assists, totalling 11 points, and had 17 PIMs.
Fast forward to 2023, and the Rangers have now chosen to offer him a PTO to assess whether he can contribute to the team for a second time. If he demonstrates his value, it will bolster the Rangers' defensive lineup.
Throughout his NHL career, Clendening has participated in 90 games, accumulating four goals, 20 assists, 24 points, and a +11 rating. He is renowned for his penalty-killing abilities and his prowess as a shutdown defenseman, qualities that would be valuable assets for the Rangers should he secure a spot on the roster.
