It's great news that veteran defenseman Marc Staal is officially back and ready to play tonight against the New York Islanders.
When asked about his absence, Staal revealed that he had been out with broken ribs, sustained after his ribs were wrapped around an opponent's knee.
He had trouble catching his breath on the bench, which kept him out for a while.

However, John Tortorella, who noted Staal's rugged play on the ice, missed his contributions as a defenseman. Staal was signed for $1.1 million as a depth option and mentor if needed.
Torts: "One thing I like about [Staal]... he's always in the way. Sometimes I look at him and say, 'Oh my God, he just looks so ugly.' His skating.... his feet are sideways. Stick's up in the air. But he gets in the way. Finds a way to defend the proper way."
Staal has only played 4 games for the Philadelphia Flyers this season and the team is 18 games deep into the regular season.
