Patrik Laine's NHL career has been interesting, to say the least. Just before his drafting in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, he explained in several interviews and meetings with the media that he felt he had a good shot at being selected first overall over Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews.

Of course, that did not happen, and he was selected second by the Winnipeg Jets. After playing five seasons for the Jets and producing modest numbers as his career wore on, including a decline in goal scoring from his career high of 44 in 2017-2018.
He was then traded to the Blue Jackets, where he has spent the last four seasons and has not generated the high totals they were expecting. Recently, over the past few weeks, his ice time has been declining, and this week he was a healthy scratch.
The Jackets were facing off against the Flyers when Laine was asked by the media how he felt about being a healthy scratch.

Embarrassing is certainly a word to describe it. The expectations behind this player were through the roof when he was drafted, and to say his career has been stable and productive certainly isn't the case.
Laine is in the second year of his four-year $34.8 million contract, where he carries a cap hit of 8.7 million per season.
With the dwindling numbers and the atrocious plus-minus number of -54, he will certainly not be an attractive player in a trade if Blue Jackets General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen wishes to move away from his beleaguered winger.
