Despite leaving Sweden with only one point out of four, the Detroit Red Wings found a silver lining in former Philadelphia Flyers and Lehigh Valley Phantoms goaltender Alex Lyon. Lyon, who hasn't played a regular-season game since April with the Florida Panthers, displayed a seamless return, earning another start against the New Jersey Devils at Little Caesars Arena.

With their goaltender Ville Husso unavailable due to welcoming a new baby, Lyon stepped in after James Reimer's start against Ottawa. Head coach Derek Lalonde praised Lyon's confident play, defending the decision not to start Husso, who had limited practice.
''A goalie looks confident when he's stopping the puck''
Lalonde said, citing Lyon's impact with a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes against a strong offensive team like the Leafs.
Lyon, known to Flyers fans, stopped 26 of 29 shots, resembling the trusted goalie from the Panthers' Stanley Cup run last spring. Reflecting on his journey, Lyon highlighted the challenges of transitioning to the NHL after a stint in the American League.
''Being a third goalie my whole career, it's kind of like that,» Lyon said. «You can try to be as ready as you want in the American League, but it's a different beast when you get up here. You have to kind of prepare for that and stay mentally sharp that way. The Covid season (2020) I was largely on the taxi squad. I think that was a good, valuable experience for me in terms of being able to stay ready on a regular basis without ever having an end goal in sight.''
