The Philadelphia Flyers and their fans should be surprised and proud to hear that they have a sneaky edge over the Calgary Flames this summer in the Gaudreau sweepstakes.

This was brought to our attention by Brandon J Sommermann. Basically, because of the incredibly high income tax that they have throughout Canada, the Flyers have an advantage when it comes to Gaudreau's annual net income.
"If Flyers offer 7-yr $59.5M ($8.5M AAV), Flames would have to offer 7-yr $63M ($9M AAV) to match b/c of tax rates."

In other words, the Flames must offer a deal worth $500K more AAV to match any PHI offer. For example, if Chuck Fletcher and Brad Treviling offer Gaudreau the same 7 year at $59.5M dollar offer, Gaudreau benefits an extra 1 million by taking the Philly one.
To further illustrate, Sommermann provided more examples:
"Flames:
$8M AAV (net $4.18M)
$8.5M AAV (net $4.45M)
$9M AAV (net $4.7M"

"Flyers:
$7.5M AAV (net $4.05M)
$8M AAV (net $4.31M)
$8.5M AAV (net $4.58M)"
There is no doubt that the Flyers have an advantage here. But would Gaudreau see 1 million dollars extra as an incentive to move to Philly? Maybe clauses in his contract like singing bonuses or in season achievements can boost our chances.
One thing is sure, if this deal does go down, it will be a long term deal and surely be in the $10M+ range. I expect there to be a full no move clause too. We''ll have to wait and see. Anything is possible.
